Crops and Food in The Colony North Carolina
In Colonial North Carolina times, we will capture moments of the farmer's struggles, the most common foods they ate and how involved they were with importing and exporting crops and plants. When the Colonist from Virginia came to North Carolina they were looking for a place with rich soil and great for farming. The Colonist were unhappy. The soil was dry and sandy and would be unhealthy for the plants to grow in that environment. Other colonies with better soil exported fruits and vegetables to North Carolina. Eventually, the farmers stopped getting foods from other colonies recognizing the beauty in their own soil and started growing a lot of crops on their land. When the colonist from Virginia arrived in North Carolina, they were only exposed to the food that they ate in Europe so they took advantage of tasting new things. Some of the american foods they explored were vanilla, tomato, potato, and sweet potato. Some of the beverages they drank were chocolate, tea, and coffee. Some household businesses started making alcohol such as beer and rum.
Poem
Don’t Step On Me!
Don’t you step there my fellow seed master
I am trying to sleep so don’t bother me
I know you look at me with shame or laughter
You shouldn't as long as you don’t eat me
But if you do
My friends will fill you with ooooz
Terry Turnip and Carry Carrot can fly in the air too
So Please don’t eat me Mr. Seed-Master
And If you do you
They might bury you with laughter
Narrative
The Inside Life of Lurina Scott
Lurina Scott (Lurie) had her life planned out as soon as she could walk. Her mother and father told her that in order to be a woman like her mother, she had to get married and watch over her kids while her husband worked. Lurie didn’t mind this because she loved to cook, clean, and help around the house. Well, Lurie surely did get married to a man named John Scott and they had eleven children which was the average amount of children in their time. However, there was one thing different that her parents did not plan or did not want.....
The Inside Life of Lurina Scott
Lurie was an owner of the most finest bakery. Her parents were ashamed that their 35 year old daughter worked , but Lurie only did it because she loved what she did... baking! Lurie loved to bake blueberry and strawberry pastries. Although Lurie owned a bakery, she also like to cook regular meals so she applied to a job at a local diner. Due to her working , she was mistreated by her parents and her husband did not like the idea either. In spite of their disapproval, Lurie got the job and she was running her own business, working part time at the diner, taking care of her family and being a supporting wife which was hard work. On July 29,1756, her husband came home with news of terror.....news that would make your heart drop in a second. The news was the he had quit his job because of the disrespect that his fellow colonist gave him because Lurie worked. John was not happy that Lurie ruined his job, but no matter how hard he tried to stop her from working she would not. This was because she loved what she did. Lurie’s life was horrible at this point. Their is now only one person working in their house. The next day she went to the bakery and did not make the food right and the customer’s complained about the dry and filthy taste of the food.
The Inside Life of Lurina Scott
Lurie went home and did not cry. She wrote a ton of hand written letters about how she is sorry and she only did it because her life right know isn’t the best. The next day was Sunday and since her family is highly religious she went to church the whole entire day, but when lunch came she started to bake. When Lurie has free time she would bake. Her husband asked if she could do more house work and she thought about that for a minute or two an she replied well you could always clean the dishes or cloths. Her husband thought that it was appalling that she would suggested the he should do worked. After they finished a long day in church, Lurie wondered if she wanted to live like this for the rest of her life. The truth was, Lurie didn’t want to go to work being judged because she was doing something more than just washing, cleaning and cooking. The sad part is that everyone believed that is was only a woman's job to wash, clean and cook. Well, everyone except Lurie. Lurie talked to her husband about his opinions and how she felt. After that long discussion, Lurie’s husband was supportive of her dreams. Lurie called the most popular colonist and their family to talk about women’s rights and how they should be treated just as fair as men. Lurie’s speech about women's right only empowered very few people of North Carolina’s, but Lurie didn't care about the number of people supported her dream. She cared about the message that she gave the people.
North Carolina: Where Warm Climates Meet Great Crops
I think the Southern Colonies especially North Carolina were the best places to go crops. North Carolina, one of the southern colonies, is good for growing and planting crops. The damp and warm weather made it much easier for crops to grow throughout the year. The soil was also rich, fertile and full of nutrients. Crops grew very well because of the long, warm growing seasons.
The warm climate was also good for many colonists to hunt and fish for food. One of the reasons why it is such a great place to grow crops is that it rains very frequently to help the plants grow. North Carolina can plant pretty purple flowers that make blue dye, indigo. Indigo is used for dyeing fabrics and some people keep the flowers for pretty decorations. With no surprise, the southern colonies specialized in farming because of the warm climate and the dampness of the rain that help the crops grow really well.
